Swifties hope for Reputation (Taylor’s Version)

Swifties everywhere have been anticipating the release of Taylor Swift’s Reputation (Taylor’s Version). Every Eras Tour outfit is analyzed and each pattern is decoded; long story short, it is a part-time job for many. However, when these theories fall short, they usually need to begin again, left haunted by the announcement staying only in their wildest dreams. This delicate cycle revolves around the mastermind’s small easter eggs, from note changes and necklaces to anniversaries and numbers.

Many theories have arisen with millions hoping for closure, but none have been proven true. One avid Swiftie who only has the album in her wildest dreams keeps bouncing back, even after many failed theories. Many times, she has tried to predict the announcement with each sign she sees turning out to be no more than a hoax.

Charlotte J. ‘27 says, “Let’s see… back in November, when [the Eras Tour] was in Sao Paulo, I definitely thought then. Last night [Tuesday, August 20, 2024], I thought she was gonna [announce Reputation (Taylor’s Version)]. And back, when it was the beginning of June or whatever, that too. And I guessed the Grammys, too. I definitely thought it was gonna be when she was in Brazil or when it was the 116th show or whatever, and it was 666.” These are just some more recent examples of the fans’ prophecies being no more than sweet nothings.

This sad, beautiful, tragic tradition of predicting Swift’s next releases and announcements is known as ‘clowning’ amongst Swifties. Some easter eggs, possible clues hinting to releases and announcements, caught by fans include a necklace Swift wore during the 1989 section of her show. The necklace was similar to the one seen in the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video from the Reputation Album, a pattern regarding the 1989 outfit colors, and song references in TaylorNation posts. She has also caused excitement after marching across the stage like in the “Delicate” music video, posts with numbers tied to important dates, webpage glitches and passwords, and hand motions made on stage.

To anyone who is not a Taylor Swift fan who’s gotten this far, good job, and let me explain. Swift’s re-releases have been seen as frivolous, petty, unnecessary, and like she should’ve let it stay buried. However, she wasn’t motivated by money or ego. Scooter Braun bought the rights to her masters in 2019, despite Swift continually trying to buy them back for several years prior.

Her record label ended up choosing to sell them to Braun instead of Swift, ultimately leading to her leaving the label. Swift worried about the possibility of Braun using her desire for ownership of her work to exploit her and chose to leave. Braun had also represented Kanye West during the “Famous” scandal that included fake phone calls, name-calling, and Swift learning that what she thought had died… didn’t stay dead.

In 2009, Swift won a VMA award for Best Female Video. However, in the middle of her acceptance speech, West interrupted her by saying Beyonce deserved the award instead of Swift. Both women were frustrated and embarrassed as a result of this action. Furthermore, West’s song, “Famous” (2016) includes the lyric, “I made that [girl] famous.” This is a direct reference to the VMAs, essentially saying that she was only famous because of Kanye and his actions, not her hard work. This is what Reputation is known for being about.

She went through a reflection period around 2016. She left the public eye for a year, because of all the hate she was getting from the media. Reputation was the album she released after coming back into the spotlight, showing that she wanted to shed that image. Before and after this album, Swift had a system. She would release one album every two years. However, Reputation was a glitch.

A similar pattern is currently happening with the rereleases; Sofia D. ‘26 references this pattern; “It’s probably not going to be announced until next year. Because she has a pattern- one new album, and two Taylor’s Versions- but it’s too soon for the Taylor’s Version.”

Some other theories for the Reputation re-release include September 13, 2024. Some of the reasoning behind this prediction includes some snake motions made on stage, Friday the thirteenth, and maybe the fact that the theorized date is today. As Sofia mentioned, there is a good chance that it will be released in a little while longer. It wouldn’t fit the pattern, as Swift is still in her Tortured Poet’s Department era.

So, when will Taylor re-release Reputation? It’s hard to say. The easter eggs have been occurring more and more, but maybe this is just another red herring. Swifties everywhere will keep asking questions. This is us trying to figure out when the end game will be because we’re ready for it.
