Following every HHS Homecoming Assembly is a semi-formal dance where students put on their dresses and suits and meet with their friends for a night of fun and entertainment. This year, however, a few changes have been made.
As opposed to the event being hosted in the student center as it usually is, this year, it was in the main gym. This allowed for a wider indoor area and more creative room for planners, as opposed to having to stretch the dance floor outside.
Student government members Jana Brewer ‘29 and Ainsley Landon ‘29 both played a role during the planning for this event. Brewer states, “We had never had the HOCO dance in the gym in so long, so it was like starting from scratch, which was both a blessing and a hardship.” Landon adds onto that with, “We wanted to move it out of the student center so people wouldn’t have to have been pushed out into the outside area, and so it could feel more like a school dance. It was really hard to try and plan around how we can incorporate that space while still keeping it condensed, but I think we did it.”
Most students seemed to be on board with this approach to the dance. Katelynn Bernardi ‘28 claims, “I feel like this was a much better dance compared to last year’s. Last year, we didn’t really have anything to do in such a tight area, so we kind of just sat there and did nothing. This year, we actually have a chance to come together and make friends, instead of just being on our phones the entire time.”
Landon concluded with, “Our goal this year was to bring it back to feeling like a school dance, without there being a billion activities to distract you from the main part.”
