Friend: Gracie Abrams is an up and coming artist this year, gaining a lot of following from her opener appearance at Taylor Swift’s iconic Eras Tour and is now a grammy nominee. If you like Taylor, Olivia Rodrigo, or Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams is a definite must-listen. “Friend” is one of those songs where you can instantly feel the atmosphere and winter feel. It has a very similar ambiance to it that Olivia Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” became so popular for. From the melody to the lyrics, the song sounds cold, just like the feeling of driving late at night with the windows down.
Les: “Les” is a song you just can’t get tired of. It has an instant uniqueness to it with rap verses and the clashing of a violin instrumental paired with a beat in the background. However, the three opposers work together to create a catchy and overall just pretty-sounding song. Sometimes rap gives off a shallow vibe, and it feels like there is no intention to the song, but “Les” just seems to have seamless imagery. The violin particularly just makes the song sound so polished and thought-through. It really starts progressing between the verses of the rap and you can hear the pick-up of the melody and story. “Les” is just like the one t-shirt in your closet you never get tired of wearing, if it’s not become an essential on your playlist yet, it is definitely worth the add.
Margaret: Upon the opening instrumental of “Margaret” it sounds like it could be in the soundtrack of a Christmas movie. It has that cozy and nostalgic feeling that instantly makes you want to keep listening. Lana del Ray and Jack Antonoff, singer in the Bleachers band and featured on this track, wrote “Margaret” for Antonoff’s now wife, Margret Quail. At Antonoff and Quail’s wedding, it was rumored to be the two’s first dance as a married couple. You can hear the sentiment of the song and the feelings that went into writing it, especially in the repetition of the lyric, “When you know, you know.” All together, the instrumentals, the lyrics, and the back story all make “Margaret” seem special and private, which makes it such a pretty song and interesting to listen to.
