It’s no shock that teachers come and go from Heritage each year, retiring and rehiring. It does matter to the students, however, to have the teachers. This is definitely the case for Mr. Flaim, a new part-time AP economics teacher.
While Flaim is not new to teaching, he is new to teaching at Heritage, “I decided to return from teaching overseas in July and HHS had a great opening in late July, so I was thrilled to come to HHS.”
He is also not new to Colorado or Littleton but as mentioned above he has not been in the States for a while now since he was teaching overseas: “It’s been fun to come back to Littleton after nearly 30 years and 20 overseas.”
Due to AP Microeconomics only being one semester long, Flaim has only had to come in on odd days to teach, however, we are going to see a lot more of him starting second semester. “I’m only teaching AP Microeconomics this semester but I’m very much looking forward to the AP Macroeconomics and the Economics, Financial Literacy, and Personal Finance classes starting in January.”
Flaim is clearly passionate about economics and social studies, but like many others, he did not start his career path in the area in which he works now. However, due to a huge inspiration, he found his passion. “Dr. Sarbaugh, a Gonzaga University History professor, inspired me to change my major from Engineering to History and Political Science, he’s been my mentor and inspiration.”
Flaim might have found his passion for Economics and Social Studies during college, but he had known that he wanted to teach from an even more previous experience, “ I was a camp counselor in the mountains and realized that I wanted to work with students for my career.”
Flaim expressed his gratitude and fondness for his time thus far at Heritage, and specifically what we stand for. “HHS has a great community spirit and I love the explicitly included service component of the MAD program.” He specifies that his students have greatly contributed to his welcome to the Heritage family, “The HHS students and advisory students are great to work with.”
All in all, we hope Mr. Flaim has a great future here at Heritage to share his love for Economics and Social Studies.
