On Thursday, March 13th, Heritage High School Theatre premiered their rendition of Mamma Mia the musical. Theatre performed this musical over four shows in the span of three days.
Mamma Mia features the hit songs from the 1970s and 80s band ABBA. In this musical, Sophie (Anna K.) tries to find her dad so he can walk her down the aisle for her wedding. However, she has three possible dads, and doesn’t know which is hers, so she invites all three to the wedding.
Heritage High School brought this musical to life through costumes, makeup and hair, lighting and crew, stage management, band/orchestra and actors, singers and dancers. All of those involved in the show in one way or another describe how these working pieces fit together.
Junior, Brooklyn N. ’26, who played Alli (One of Sophie’s best friends) describes what she thinks went well: “Our ability to adapt to all different types of challenges, especially during tech week we were moving slow.” She goes on to say, “There’s just so many different moving pieces so we were getting out late often but it’s so worth it when we get to put on a show this big and this fun.”
Another cast member, Tara D ‘26 who was a featured dancer and a part of the ensemble in this year’s show explains how the performances vary from night to night. Specifically, theatre members tend to have their nights they favor more than others. Tara explains, “I always have loved closing night. There’s so much energy, since it’s the last time we’re doing the show, and also there’s so much emotion and reality in the singing and acting.”
Along with cast members, none of the musical would be possible without all the people behind the scenes. There are many crew members that all help accomplish this performance: stage managers, construction crew, hair and makeup, costume, house and publicity, lights, paint, props, sound, and run crew.
Lily R. ‘26, Assistant Crew Head for Costumes states, “My role in this show was to keep everything with costumes organized and make sure everything on stage looked put together. We had a vision of what we wanted everything to look like, so we had to make sure we stuck to that.”
Throughout all the members, cast and crew, Mamma Mia was a hit, and even sold out two of the four nights.
