Student Government plays a huge role in what happens here at Heritage. Over the course of four years, each Student Government sponsor is assigned many tasks and projects. Student Government runs concessions at football games, plans Homecoming and Winter Spirit Weeks, Prom, Senior Scram, and much more for our school! None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for our student government sponsors.
This year, the Freshmen Class of 2028 have Ms. Jami DeVries as their sponsor. Ms. Cassie Henderson and Ms. Amy Sawyer are the sponsors for the Sophomores, Class of 2027. Class of 2026, this year’s Juniors, have Ms. Jessica Key and Mr. Eric Hofshire. Lastly, the Senior Class of 2025 have Mr. Andy Ambron as their sponsor.
Student Government is student-based, so sponsors help facilitate the ideas of the students. Ambron explains that he helps give students support, helps with problem solving, keeps things organized through different projects, works through roadblocks and builds strong relationships within his advisory.
When discussing his role in his advisory, Ambron states, “As they work on various projects, I try to make sure they have a clear plan and path going forward and try to help them problem-solve when they need it.” Ambron adds, “I really just try and facilitate what direction they want to go in, because that’s the most important thing.”
Student government sponsors volunteer their extra free time by giving back to the school and community and supporting students at Heritage High School.
Since these sponsors spend so much free time working on Student Government events, Key describes student government as “a great opportunity to be involved in the school.”
Student Government takes up the advisory period that many students use to get work done. In student government, sponsors are not only teachers for the advisories, but also get to work with a mix of students from their Freshman year to Senior year.
Key says that she enjoys seeing her student government students get involved in the school and community. In which students take on many roles with passion in order to make the school a better place.
So the next time you attend an event planned by the student government, not only should you think about the students’ work, but take a minute and think about the student government sponsors that made this possible.
