This past Monday, a Golden Retriever entered the school during the first few minutes of first period. As the moments-late stragglers walked through the doors, the dog walked alongside them. Activities Director Jill McCormick says the dog was, “missing a collar, but was wearing this… oversized grey t-shirt, and a blue blow-up collar, because we think it had just recently had a surgery of some sort.”
McCormick further recalls, “It took us a second [to figure out what to do] because we all kinda looked out the front door to see if there was a human coming in with the dog, and then when we realized there wasn’t, we all tried to follow the dog and try to constrain it until we could figure out what was going on.”
Post-Grad Specialist Joni Lieb, another eyewitness, started going around the neighborhood around the school asking if anyone knew who the dog’s owner was. “Because I know that if my dog had gotten out, I would be out scouring the neighborhood. And I know that people walk their dogs rather regularly. I was thinking, you know, if we can get the word out that we have a dog here at Heritage, somebody’s going to know that dog, and who the owner is.”
Lieb describes the dog as “super sweet and friendly.” She continues,” You could tell it was well taken care of.” After it was caught in the science hallway, it was kept in McCormick’s office. Staff called animal control to check for a chip, and the officer took the dog.
Thankfully, McCormick has an ending for this tale; “After the officer took the dog to be chipped, his owner actually came down to the school looking for it. We told him we had sent the dog with animal control, and he went to go get the dog. So I guess there was a happy ending!”
