Some Heritage students, and other local high schools like Arapahoe and Littleton, take the time out of their school day to go and encourage incoming students to join their Performing Arts programs. This is called “Adventures in Performing Arts.” This year, on January 15 and 16, Heritage showed off their Concert Band performing “The Incredibles Theme” from The Incredibles, Winter Percussion doing an excerpt from their show, and Winter Guard doing a routine to “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters at Newton, Powell, Euclid, and Goddard.
So, why should incoming students join Heritage’s performing arts?
Charlotte Healy ’28 is a member of the Winter and Color Guard. She says, “It’s my first year doing color guard, or anything dance related, and honestly it’s been a really good community building activity. I’m really close with a lot of the people in color guard and they’re all super friendly. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, especially in winter guard. You get to meet a lot of different people from different schools, and a lot of people who are in winter activities. I would say incoming students should at least try it out.”
Asche Orr ’28, a student from the Symphonic and Jazz Band, shares, “I would say it’s [the band classes] a really good way to build your network because—contrary to throughout middle school, with one singular group of people in your grade level throughout all three years—in high school band, there’s multiple different bands that combine all the grades, and in some cases, all the schools.” She also adds, “It’s a great way to expand from the people you know, and meet new people from all sorts of backgrounds. It’s a really good community experience, because when you join, there’s automatically a click between students, since there’s a shared interest.”
Mr. Evan Allenson, the performing arts director, says, “The big thing I would tell to the incoming freshmen would be to try something. I usually hear from new students things like, ‘I can’t do this because it doesn’t fit, etc. etc.’, but sometimes they haven’t tried this activity, so they don’t know what it actually feels like. So, the main thing I would say is to just try it.”
