As we enter a new year, new fashion trends emerge. People give their predictions about what they think will happen with the coming year’s trends. This time, the most popular prediction is that 2014 is making a comeback.
The year 2014 was all about simplicity and normal clothes,“Normcore”. Oversized jackets, cropped shirts, and especially skinny jeans were very popular at this time. Statement jewelry was a must. The eye-catching, chunky necklaces were a very popular trend. To compare, 2024 has the “Clean Girl” aesthetic. This consists of black leggings or straight leg jeans, either a simple fitted shirt or an oversized graphic tee. Dainty gold jewelry and very light makeup is another iconic part of this look. Although the clothes are very different, the vibe of it is pretty similar.
In 2014, Tumblr was an app and website for blogging, memes, and just general communities. Instagram wasn’t used like it is today. Back then, people just posted their food with colorful filters. Now, people post their vacations, outings, and even just photos of themselves. Musica.ly (now known as TikTok), was just introduced and had not gained much popularity. However, in 2024, social media is all about growing a following and engaging with people you don’t know, it was much different in 2014. Facebook was one of the most popular social media apps at the time. You would post status updates, pictures of you or your friends, and post on other peoples walls. It was a little community for you and your friends, not about curating an image for the public. Then, people didn’t really care what they posted because it was all silly and for fun.
While people will always believe their own ideas of what will become trendy each year, we can’t accurately predict. We will have to wait and see if 2014 really makes a comeback or not.
