On Tuesday, January 16, while most students were enjoying their snow day, a group of dedicated young musicians filled Boettcher Concert Hall. This year was the 35th annual Continental League Honor Music Festival. This event brings kids from Colorado high schools together to expand their craft. Over 20 students from Heritage participated across Band, Orchestra, and Choir. Students in Band and Orchestra went through an in person audition process while those in Choir were hand selected by Mr. Keena. The students get their music, then began rehearsals with the full group.

The festival offers a unique opportunity for students to work with esteemed conductors from in and out of state. Many students appreciated this aspect, as it gives them insight into their musicianship. Evan M. ’26 is a bass in Concert Choir. He participated in this and last year’s performances. He says, “I had a really good time at Continental league. I got to have bonding experiences with a lot of my friends in choir as well as get to work with a really amazing guest director.” Aedan G. ’26 played first clarinet in the band and also enjoyed the experience. “I liked the ensemble, the guest conductor was really good with us and taught a lot,” he explained.

The music selection this year explored different genres and cultures. One of the band’s foursongs was “A four movement piece called ‘Suite Provencale’ that I liked. It was a French piece based on French folk music.” Aedan remarks. The choir performed five songs, one in Latin “Nisi Dominus”. Evan thoroughly enjoyed this piece for its challenge and beauty. Finishing their three piece set, the orchestra played “¡Bienvenido júbilo!”. This was especially sentimental because it has been commissioned by their conductor, Mr. Kevin Noe, in 2022.

The performance was beautiful and a true display of dedication amongst high school musicians.
