As a freshman, Zona W. is a state qualifier and broke the school record with a time of 24.15 in the 200m track event. She also participates in other events; Zona runs the 100m, 200m, 4×100, and 800SMR, which stands for sprint medley relay.

Zona says she’s been running for “as long as I can remember. I grew up playing soccer and always loved running around the field. So once I got to do track with Shaw, it felt amazing to be able to run competitively, as I’ve always loved it”.

All that practice and running throughout the years got her somewhere in her early high school years. She’s not done; Zona adds, “I’m excited to try and break it again next year.” With the record-breaking time, she is setting future goals for herself to push even further and hopefully break it again!

Zona always feels amazing after running, especially in this race. She impressed many people by breaking the record and even surprised herself. She explains, “I honestly thought breaking the record wasn’t something I was going to do as a freshman, as the original time was incredible. But it gave me a goal to work towards, and once I reached it, it felt great”.

Dani D., a sophomore, is another excellent runner and state qualifier. She runs relays and hurdles. Her relay team, which consisted of Dani, Zona, Ryan T., and Anna J., won second place.

Dani has been running for 3 years and still loves it today. Competing is always nice for Dani; she says, “It always feels amazing when you know you are the best team out there and get to show off your skill to all the spectators and coaches there. I was very happy with our placing, knowing that we went in being one of the lower seeds and came out of it with a medal.”

Overall, this year records were set, memories were made, and the love for running grew stronger.
