On October 8th, a group of DCPA actors and techs came to Heritage to perform an abridged version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. English classes came down to the parking lot behind the tennis courts to watch during 2nd, 4th, and 6th periods. The group known as “Shakespeare in the Parking Lot” tours around schools five days a week and hosts public performances on Saturdays. The actors switch parts regularly and rotate through three shows: “Macbeth”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Romeo and Juliet”. The technicians run sound effects and music for the show.
Van S. ’25 enjoyed viewing the production. “It was an interesting experience to see professional actors perform in an ‘unprofessional’ setting,” he says.
Ms. Jennifer Langford organized the event today. It was scheduled for Monday as well but unfortunately, the cast had to cancel due to health issues. Theater enthusiast and Heritage student Oliver R. ’26 says, “I really liked it! It was really artistic and they took some cool creative liberties.”
The show used a mixture of modern and historical elements. Though the language was mostly source-accurate, the costumes, props, and subtle jokes were adapted for a 21st-century audience. These changes make the show accessible and easily understandable for students with various levels of experience in live theater and Shakespeare knowledge.
If students are interested in seeing more live Shakespeare they can purchase tickets to the Heritage fall play: The Comedy of Errors. Tickets are for sale online at https://heritagehightheatre.com/buy-tickets.
