Earlier this year, the energy company Enron, known for its many scandals, laid its egg. On January 7th, 2025, Enron teased its new upcoming project, The Egg. This less-than-poultry production was planned to be an at-home nuclear reactor that could power your entire home for up to 10 continuous years.
Advertised to have only 20% enriched uranium, labeled “Far too low to create an atomic weapon”, along with only the highest-ranking Enron scientists having access to the internals, safety is practically a guarantee. That was said sarcastically, as I believe a nuclear reactor in your home of any size would most definitely lead to radiation sickness as well as unpredictable future consequences and diseases.
Although the idea of The Egg being real is incredibly funny, this was eventually shown to be a parody, with the crowd in the reveal video being fake, along with the website itself stating in the terms of service that “The information on the website is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” The actual Enron company filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and in December 2024, a parody company was launched using its name. This parody company then went on to fabricate a release trailer and even a model product of this egg.
Personally, I believe that at-home nuclear energy could be a great source of mostly clean energy, however, it will probably not be achieved any time soon. This is because containing enough radioactive material to power your house for a substantial amount of time would take hundreds of thousands of dollars, as well as a large space so that radiation sickness does not poison your family. So, while this could be a good idea in the far future, for now, it is just a fairy tale.
