With chess becoming as popular as it is through the media, some Heritage students may be interested in attending Chess Club. As of a couple of weeks ago, only a small handful of people were present and only one game was in progress.
One of the students at the chessboard was Nate G. ’26, who explained his love for the game. “The flow,” Nate says, “is whenever you can see an attack opportunity or if any of your pieces are under attack. It’s just the way the game essentially moves on. The way you’ve got to defend or seek new opportunity with every move.”
Nate states that his favorite part of Chess Club is the competition. “I get to play against a bunch of other people and it’s fun to meet other people who are equally as good, if not better.”
When asked what makes Chess Club unique from other clubs at Heritage, Nate astutely responded, “I mean, they probably don’t play chess, do they?”
Playing on the other side of the chessboard was Richard S. ’27, who states that “you get to meet new people and it’s fun. I enjoy chess and playing with other people because I’m a very competitive person.”
In addition to the friendly competition, Richard adds that Chess Club “is something to do at Heritage that’s not school related,” and that “it gives you something to do instead of staying at home on your phone.”
Mrs. Starks-Yoble, the sponsor of the club, says that doughnuts are occasionally brought for the club to enjoy, calling it “Doughnuts and Checkmates”. Anyone who is interested in some extra mental stimulation or amiable competition can stop by room 3135 from 9:00 to 9:15 before school on Wednesdays! Chess Club is open to all and would certainly benefit from more attendees.
