Many people have been to downtown Littleton; it’s a popular spot, with lots of restaurants and local shops. But some people may not know about what is hiding underneath. Local folklore tells a tale of a secret network of tunnels hidden deep beneath the town, but is it just a legend?

Upon researching the topic, there is very little information available. According to Colorado Public Radio (cpr.org), in many of Colorado’s urban locations, there are “hollow sidewalks,” which are tunnel-like buffer zones underneath sidewalks.

While there are no confirmed hollow sidewalks in Littleton, it is likely that there is something similar, due to the fact that they are popular amongst other Colorado towns. The Denver Post cites, “Before the car was inverted, tunnels were used by the wealthy to avoid grime and thievery.”

One urban legend is that once the wealthy stopped using the tunnels, some illegal businesses used the tunnels to escape the sheriff; however, there is no evidence of such. Some buildings in downtown Littleton do have underground basement levels, making these tunnels possible at the very least.

HHS student Ryan Brereton ‘27 says, “I have heard of that legend, but I have never actually seen anything related.” There is a lot of reasons why the legend may have started; however, due to a lack of solid evidence showing tunnels under Littleton, it still remains a mystery.
