When most people think of a high school music performance, some of the first things that come to mind include great, grand composers from decades ago, like Mozart or Beethoven. Pop culture legends, like songs from memes or films, aren’t exactly the first thing to think of.
At Heritage’s Pops Concert, however, we see songs that we can recognize upon the first notes, such as “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire, and “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley—alternatively known as the “Rickroll”.
Ms. Grace Dougherty, the choir director, reports, “The Pops Concert is like a mix between a regular ensemble concert and a musical. There’s some choreography, lights in different colors, and fun, fast transitions. All of the music is popular, whether it be from the 2000s, or modern media.”
Dougherty compares this year’s concert to the previous one, saying, “Last year was my first time working together with Mr. Allenson on stage management. This year, though, we changed to two performances. Last time, we had to actually send some families away because the auditorium was too full, so we started using a ticket system.” About the performance itself, she adds, “I like watching the students learn about a production like this, and owning what they’re doing because directors can’t be in five places at the same time. This year, the lights are more involved, and the students now have a better idea on what they’re supposed to be doing.”
Not only do directors feel good about tonight’s performance, but students do as well.
“I feel pretty good about it. More than I would with other concerts,” says Alice Caires ’29. “Knowing what you’re performing helps a lot with getting the tempo, and since the songs are pretty recognizable, it’s easier to master.”
Camden O’Haire ’26 adds on with, “I like the music. I think it’s an interesting choice, and it will definitely reach the audiences better. Ending the school year with a concert like this one is the best way to conclude the performing arts curriculum.”
